Packaging and Circularity

All our packaging is purchased from third-party suppliers. Most is assembled in our own factories to package our products.

From switching to paper-based alternatives to cutting unnecessary plastic, we’re reimagining every step of how our teas and infusions are wrapped, packed and shipped.

Our targets

100% of our packaging

to be recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2030

All tea bags

to be home compostable by 2035

What we're doing

We’ve eliminated 20 kilotonnes (around 70%) of non-recyclable material from our packaging since 2020. Today, our packaging is substantially more environmentally friendly, certified compostable and widely recyclable, with unnecessary plastic like film wrap minimised.

Timeline of our work to achieve more sustainable packaging

Over the past five years, we've made significant striders toward more sustainable packaging, substantially reducing our environmental footprint.

Today, our packaging is significantly more environmentally friendly, certified compostable and widely recyclable, with unnecessary plastic like film wrap minimised - leading to the elimination of 20 kilotonnes (c.70%) of non-recyclable material. Here are some of the key steps on our journey:

Removing plastic film from our cartons

In an effort to reduce packaging waste, we recently took on the complex challenge of eliminating the plastic overwrap film traditionally used on our tea bag cartons.

This required the complete redesign of the cartons as the overwrap previously provided a tamper-evident seal, added strength for shipping and ensured easy handling for the consumer. Our packaging team collaborated with various suppliers to test multiple solutions.

Of these, 17 box designs were put through a comprehensive process of compression testing, shipping simulations, on-shelf testing and handling and storage assessments.

After several iterations and refinements, our team succeeded in creating a packaging solution that maintained all necessary protections while significantly reducing material usage. The outcome will be more than 100 tonnes of plastic film saved per year, marking a meaningful step toward more sustainable packaging.
